Claudette on the composer

Claudette stands on the top edge of the message box and does little things now and then, the way a small mascot sits above the message box in the Claude apps. She keeps you company, and what she does follows what your tab is doing.

Claudette on the composer: climbing up, looking around, dancing, tossing a ball, sitting on the edge, juggling, hammering, bursting into confetti, twirling, blowing a heart and falling off behind the box to climb back up.

Where she stands

She stands on the box’s top edge, near the Send button, which is her home: she comes up there, wanders along the right-hand part of the edge, and tends to walk back. She’s drawn behind the box, so the box hides her when she drops below the edge, and she rises and falls with it as it grows with your text or shrinks after you send.

She only stands where nothing else sits on the edge: not on the working line’s words or the suffix chips, and not over Jump to latest. While something fills the box’s width, such as a check-in or usage limit bar, the folder trust question, a note about an attachment, a thread’s strip or a dialog over the conversation, she ducks behind the box and climbs back when it goes. She does the same when there’s too little room.

She’s on the selected tab’s composer, and follows you from tab to tab.

What she does

Standing about, she blinks, looks around, walks a few steps, leans on the edge, sits on it with her legs swinging, stretches, waves, hops, dances, twirls, yawns, taps her foot, tosses a ball, looks puzzled, blows a heart or sneezes. Now and then, at most every three minutes, she looks down, loses her footing, falls off behind the box, and climbs back up.

While Claude works

She works too, with what suits the tool Claude is using:

Claude is She
Reading or searching files Looks through a magnifying glass
Editing files Hammers
Running a command Types at a little terminal whose output scrolls
Using the web Turns a globe
Using anything else Types on her laptop
Running subagents Juggles a ball for each, up to three
In Plan mode Writes on a clipboard

A turn that has run for three minutes sends her behind the box to come back with a coffee, which steams beside her until the turn ends. With the context window nearly full she wipes her brow now and then, and while Claude Code compacts the conversation she sweeps the edge with a broom.

Reacting to the tab

  • A prompt waits for you: she waves, straight away and then every 15 seconds.
  • A usage limit holds the task: she dozes by a small hourglass.
  • A turn finishes: she hops. It fails with an error: she’s dizzy, with stars round her head. Your own Stop doesn’t count.
  • Claude’s last task is done: confetti bursts out of her. See The Tasks page.
  • Every file the tab changed is reviewed: she stamps the edge, which leaves a green check mark. See Reviewed files.
  • Nothing happens for five minutes, or three late at night: she naps, with z’s rising. Typing wakes her.

Other tabs that need you

While another tab waits on you and this one doesn’t, she turns toward the sidebar and waves, with an arrow and a bubble: Another tab needs you · Ctrl+J, or 2 tabs need you · Ctrl+J, with the shortcut as you’ve bound it. She does it when a tab starts waiting and then every 20 seconds. The shortcut is Go to the next tab waiting for you (The command palette).

Tips

Now and then she holds up a tip in a bubble: a shortcut as it’s bound now, or one of Up brings back your earlier prompts, Drop a file on the message box to attach it, Right-click me if you’d like me to go. It’s at most every ten minutes and never within half a minute of you typing. Settings → Appearance → Shares tips turns them off.

Noticing you

  • Standing about, she looks toward the pointer when it’s well off to one side.
  • Sending a message makes her throw a paper plane up into the conversation.
  • A file dragged over the box has her arms up. A file or image you attach drops into her hands, and she puts it in the box (Attachments and large pastes).
  • A paste too big for the box has her stagger under a heavy crate, drop it in and wipe her brow.
  • Typing her name at the end of a message makes her wave back and blow a heart.

Poke, drag and right-click her

  • Click her and she’s startled, with a “!” over her head. Click again within a second and a half and she’s tipped off the edge, and climbs back up.
  • Poke her ten times within a minute and she turns her back under a storm cloud for a few seconds. Clicks do nothing until she’s come round.
  • Press and drag to pick her up: she hangs from the pointer, arms up. Let go above the edge and she falls onto it where she is, then walks home. Let go below it and she falls behind the box and climbs back up.
  • Right-click her for a menu: the games, below, Hide Claudette, and Claudette settings…, which opens her settings in Settings → Appearance.

Only her figure takes clicks. The rest of her layer lets them through to the conversation.

Her looks

Her hair tie is the color of the tab’s folder group in the sidebar, and so are the heart she blows and the ball she tosses (Folder groups). She dresses for the date, by your computer’s clock: a witch’s hat from October 24, Santa’s hat from December 1 to December 26, and a nightcap from 11 at night to 5 in the morning, when she also yawns more.

Games

The right-click menu also has Play tic-tac-toe, Play Connect Four, Play hangman and Play Minesweeper. See Games with Claudette.

Hide her, and bring her back

Choose Hide Claudette on her menu, or turn off Settings → Appearance → Show Claudette on the composer. Turn the setting back on to bring her back.

Reduced motion

While motion is reduced, she stands still at home, in the first pose of whatever the tab has her doing: standing, working with the tool’s prop, sweeping, waving, dozing or pointing at the sidebar with its bubble. She doesn’t react to clicks, events or the pointer, and she can’t be carried. Settings → Appearance → Motion sets this: Follow the system (the default), Reduce motion or Don’t reduce (Accessibility).

Screen readers pass her by, because she’s decoration. What she says in her bubbles is also said elsewhere: the badge and announcements for waiting tabs (Notifications).

All of them are in Settings → Appearance.
